[3] In both manuscripts, this is written indistinguishably from the other name Saṃjaya mentions. In M2 (3a), both are written as بہیکم; in M1 (5a), which is as a rule not precise about diacritics, the shape the second time is identical to the first, i.e., to بہکہم, the difference being that the second time there are two diacritical dots, almost certainly for بہیکہم as I have emended in the above. It seems that both names noted here are therefore transliterations of “Bhīṣma,” in contrast to the Sanskrit text, in which Bhīṣma’s leadership of the Kauravas is contrasted to Bhīma’s skill in guarding the Pāṇḍavas’ force. This may be an oversight of the translator(s) or an attempt to resolve the well-known interpretational difficulties with this verse (1:10).
